Verian has chronicled the changing social, political and business landscape of the UK over an uninterrupted nine decades. In 2026, we focus on delivering tailored research and consultancy services to policy makers working at the highest levels of national government. Our team is based in the heart of Westminster and comprises more than 150 FTE staff in a variety of roles and each with strong links to the wider global business.
We are now seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join our Methods team, a cross-company group of research design specialists. This role is a full-time, permanent, hybrid home/office role suitable for somebody completing a Doctorate in a relevant topic or with comparable practical experience.
The UK Methods team is a group of research design specialists and data analysts, providing technical and statistical support to each of our client-handling teams. Although the successful candidate would work across our client base and provide ad hoc support to other members of the UK Methods team, the principal focus of this role will be on complex survey design. This would include work on one-off studies of public sector service delivery as well as on broader evaluations of policy in their real life context. It would also include work to improve research design (e.g. through the analysis of ‘paradata’ generated in the course of delivering large-scale social surveys).
In addition, the successful candidate should be prepared to apply his/her statistical skills and broader methodological knowledge to a variety of projects across the business. These projects will be of three types:
- client work, which would include sampling, weighting, and multivariate analysis/interpretation of substantive data;
- development work, which may include investigation of new statistical techniques, software packages and routines, and reviewing methodological literature to support new offer elements within Verian; and
- business generation work, which may include contributing to the methodological shape of proposed research projects, drafting elements of the bid documents, and carrying out literature searches to ensure evidential support for what is proposed.
As noted above, this role is most suitable for somebody completing a Doctorate with a substantial focus on research methodology, especially surveys. However, this role may also suit candidates with substantial ‘real world’ experience who can demonstrate an understanding of the principal statistical considerations underpinning research design. We would expect the successful candidate to have very strong verbal and written skills.
